2012 Courses for Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Professionals

Fee: $50 for each course (6 CEUs), unless noted otherwise. Workshop certificates of attendance are given at the end of the workshop after completing the full 6 hours. State required trainings are not eligible for discounts and do not count for CEU’s.
Courses are recommended for: mental health professionals: substance abuse counselors, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, school counselors.

A Counselor’s Guide to Active Listening Skills and Motivational Feedback

Learning to listen actively and deeply requires practice and this workshop will provide lots of practice. Listening behind the words for underlying themes will support development of insight. Exercises and games will help workshop participants hone their listening skills and provide motivating feedback leading to positive client change.

Clinical Supervision: Exploring Your Own Philosophy While Developing a Helpful Supervision Style

This workshop will support the participant in defining a professional philosophy of clinical supervision leading to the development of a helpful supervision style. Samples of annual clinical supervision plans and skills for daily supervision will be developed based on individual supervisee need. Educational materials will be drawn from NAADAC and state CCS test prep to aid in preparing for the state board CCS exam.

40 Hour Peer Support Specialist Training
April 23rd, 24th, 30th, 2012 - 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Peer Support Specialist Training is designed for individuals who have personal lived experience with mental illness and/ or addictive disorders and are interested in helping others achieve their goals through recovery and wellness. This training meets the requirements set forth by the NC Behavioral Health Resource Program and the Division of MH/DD/SAS (www.ncdhhs.gov/mhddsas) as a necessary pre-requisite for NC Peer Support Specialists Certification. Applications are due by April 15th, 2012 and may be requested by emailing morrislandrea@gmail.com

Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment: A Community Approach to Treatment

One of the more difficult clients to work with is the dually diagnosed client that struggles with both mental illness and substance abuse. Key to treatment of the dually diagnosed is treating both diagnoses. The treatment approach must be holistic with a team that has dually trained professionals, and the utilization of natural community supports and resources. Biochemical perspectives will be examined that lend credence to the internal struggles that a dually diagnosed person faces daily.

Understanding & Using the ASAM Criteria

Workshop participants will learn basic use of the ASAM criteria. Four features characterize the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria: (1) individualized treatment planning, (2) ready access to services, (3) attention to multiple treatment needs, and (4) ongoing reassessment and modification of the plan. The ASAM criteria advocates for individualized, assessment-driven treatment and the flexible use of services across a broad continuum of care. Workshop participants will identify local treatment resources to match each level of care.

Group Therapy Special: Team Building and Icebreakers

Getting a group warmed up and ready to “work” is the beginning to getting the most out of their group therapy time. These exercises will help build trust, social skills, common interests and conflict resolution skills right from the start. When a group is storming, team building can move the group forward and heal the relationships of storming group members. Come prepared to get physical and laugh hard so wear comfortable clothes with sneakers.

Ethics and Confidentiality in the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Worlds

Ethics and confidentiality define the therapeutic relationship and guide the counselor through the often difficult terrain of an ever changing landscape in both mental health and substance abuse. This workshop will explore the “Spirit of Ethical Behavior” leading to the HIPPA guidelines that govern disclosure. Bring a copy of your own certification and or licensure board’s ethical guidelines for small group work. This is a “hands on” workshop that will support you to explore past and present ethical dilemmas that you face in your daily clinical work.

Teaches how to develop effective, measurable and relevant goals, how to review them and update the plan accurately. Also covers how to develop meaningful crisis plans with the people you serve, and write them in the state’s format. 3 hours, 9 am to 12 pm. This training is not eligible for CEU’s.

The purpose of this training is to “help people get better lives, not just better plans.” However, better plans will happen when people are listened to and involved in the planning. 6 hours both days, 9 am to 4 pm.
